Groundwater supplies the drinking water for more than half of the people in the U.S. and is a major source of water for irrigation. Yet this previous resource is highly susceptible to contamination from a variety of sources, including leakage from storage tanks and septic systems; uncontrolled hazardous waste; and other materials from the land’s surface that penetrate the soil and end up in groundwater. If you’d like to learn more, the Groundwater Foundation website (http://www.groundwater.org/) provides information on threats to our groundwater and what’s being done to protect it from harmful pollutants.
